2006 Annual Meeting - Philanthropy: Art or Science

Proceedings of the Associated Grant Makers 2006 Business Meeting

AGM held its Annual Meeting, Philanthropy: Art or Science?, on Monday, June 19, 2006 at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Approximately 100 members and invited guests attended the day-long event. Elizabeth Smith, Board Chair, called the meeting to order and accepted a motion to approve the minutes from the 2005 meeting.

Mary Phillips, Treasurer, reviewed the 2005 year-end report, highlighting that AGM once again received an unqualified audit opinion from its auditors Alexander, Aronson and Fining, P.C. Ms. Phillips noted that AGM’s challenges in the coming year are to continue to recruit new members, retain current members, increase revenue and evaluate how best to meet the needs of its member and partners while continuing to build operating reserves.

Derry Tanner, Sudbury Foundation, Chair of the AGM program committee, was recognized for the completion of her AGM Board service. She served on the AGM for a total of six years.

Members approved the re-election of Directors for a second term of three years (2006-2009). Those Directors are: David Ford, Richard & Susan Smith Family Foundation; Elizabeth Gawron, Cape Cod Foundation; Steve Johnson, The Philanthropic Initiative; and Vahe Karlozian, Schott Foundation for Public Education.

In a brief, closed executive session, the Board of Directors approved the following officer re-elections: Elizabeth Smith, Hyams Foundation, Chair; Bill Eaton, Sailors’ Snug Harbor, Vice-Chair; Ben Lacy, Clipper Ship Foundation, Clerk; Mary Phillips, Hayden Foundation, Treasurer; Kerry Sullivan, Bank of America, Assistant Treasurer; Lily Mendez-Morgan, Access Strategies Fund, Officer at-large; David Ford, Officer at-large; Kathy McHugh, EdVestors, Past Chair, ex officio.

Finally, Elizabeth Smith, Board Chair, and Ron Ancrum, AGM President each gave a set of remarks.
