Department Overview

The WGBH Education Department designs, produces, distributes and promotes free digital media resources to support innovative teaching and learning for teachers, caregivers, parents, and children. Our interactive lessons, award-winning videos, and hands-on activities are designed for classrooms, homes, and community settings and delivered via mobile devices, online, and in print. We aim to enable our audiences to expand their knowledge, improve their skills, and enrich their lives. We are a partner with PBS in PBS LearningMedia (pbslearningmedia.org), a digital resources service/platform for PreK-12 education with over a million monthly users and thousands of free digital learning resources. We also work with WGBH brands such as Arthur, Design Squad Global, NOVA, and Frontline (among others) to develop, produce, and disseminate content for formal learning and community educational settings.

Position Overview 

WGBH Education seeks an experienced education professional to lead strategic development. Under supervision from the Executive Director of Education, the Director of Strategic Development will be responsible for conceptualizing and researching new projects, identifying appropriate partners, and developing support (financial and otherwise) for initiatives aimed at educational impact for underserved populations in particular. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, the Director of Strategic Development will: 

Conduct background research, literature reviews, partner outreach, and other due diligence to aid project development 
Track government grant cycles (NSF, DOE, NASA, NEH, IMLS) 
Work with WGBH Development team members to curate, track, cultivate, and develop philanthropic sources of support 
Generate ideas, write proposals, pitch concepts, and manage proposal development process 
Partner in business development strategy and activities - including landscape/competitive analyses, goal and market definition, product ideation, revenue model creation, and outlining measures of success 
Partner in overall department strategy, with a focus on impact 
Support grant submission efforts for the division (Children's Media and Education) as a whole, when needed 
Develop systems and processes for project development and tracking 
Serve as a spokesperson and ambassador for the department in external venues 
Support the Executive Director on other projects, as assigned

Qualifications

• Minimum five years fundraising and project management experience 
• Deep familiarity with project/proposal development processes; evidence of successful grant submissions 
• Thorough understanding of local and national education and community development landscapes (policy, practice, teacher professional development, curriculum design) 
• Savvy regarding educational technologies/media 
• Significant knowledge of and experience with government agencies (DOE, NSF, NASA, NOAA, Mass DESE, School Districts, etc.) 
• Direct experience developing and implementing innovative educational programs either in-school or out-of-school 

Preferred Experience: 
• Content knowledge in one of these areas: STEM, history/social studies/civic engagement 
• Basic knowledge of educational impact research and formative research/product testing 
• Fluency in non-profit ethos, jargon, and business tools 
• Familiarity with business models/revenue generation and/or with venture capital techniques to drive social progress 
• Experience working and developing programs with diverse, underserved populations 

Skills Required: 
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present ideas effectively and persuasively, both in public and in print 
• Strong grant-writing skills; facility with other types of writing (academic, storytelling, blogging, etc.) 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team 
• Sensitivity to a diverse range of peers and ability to troubleshoot challenges that may arise 
• Ability to work quickly and creatively under deadline 
• Entrepreneurial predilection 
• Tech-savviness 
• Basic design skills to create one-sheets, presentation decks, etc. 
• Detail-oriented, organized, efficient, and able to juggle multiple priorities 
• Analytic mindset - ability to synthesize vast amounts of information and draw incisive, insightful, actionable conclusions 
• Open-minded, learning orientation -- interested in learning new things, willingness to learn from mistakes, recognizes role boundaries, but takes initiative and can lead when needed

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in related field strongly preferred.
