Public
Policy News and Resources
(March 15, 2005) The Panel
on the Nonprofit Sector has released their Interim
Report. The Panel is asking nonprofits and foundations to consider
adding their names to the report, which can be done through their
website.
The Panel made recommendations in 15 major areas, including recommendations
in areas of governance, accountability, transparency, disclosure
of information and donor advised funds.
As a next step, the Panel will conduct a series of field meetings
across the country to hear the comments and suggestions of the broader
nonprofit community. The schedule for those field meetings may be
found on the Panel’s homepage.
In the next phase of its work, the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector
will focus on an even broader range of issues affecting charitable
organizations. Among the topics it will explore in order to make
further recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee in the spring
are:
• Revisions to IRS Form 990 returns.
• Uniform and appropriate accounting standards.
• Valuation of non-cash contributions.
• Regulation of charitable solicitations.
• Standards for compensation and travel policies for board
members and executives.
